Land Rover Celebrates 65th Anniversary, Launches Special Edition Defender "LXV"

By Trevor Dorchies | April 30, 2013

British off-road legend Land Rover is celebrating its 65th anniversary today, and to mark the occasion, it will be launching a limited-edition Defender, the "LXV." Only 65 of these special edition Defenders will be with a hard top and will include the usual 2.2-liter diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission. Land Rover is celebrating the milestone at the automaker's original proving grounds at Packington Estate, and it's expected that over 130 models from years ago will be in attendance. Some of these vehicles will be sporting features like Land Rover's first crack at anti-lock brakes, adjustable air suspension, electronic traction control, hill descent control, Terrain Response, and start/stop technology. Many of these aforementioned features are not only a first for Land Rover, but a first for the automotive world in general.

Besides these technologies, some of these vehicles will arrive in different garb ranging from professions like emergency services, expeditions, and military to royal and concept vehicles. Land Rover's heritage vehicles will sit next to the British automaker's current lineup including the Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. The new electric Defender concept vehicle will also be on hand.

As for the limited production Defender LXV, it will ride on 16-inch Sawtooth alloy wheels and dunked in Santorini black exterior paint with a Corris gray roof, grille, headlight surrounds and front-end as contrast. Inside, leather seats feature an "LXV" logo on the headrests and orange stitching seen on the seats, steering wheel, and center console. Unfortunately for those stateside, the Defender will continue to be unavailable, but for those lucky enough to live in the United Kingdom, pricing for the special edition Defender LXV starts at $44,680.
