Land Rover LR2/Freelander to be Renamed for 2015
For the upcoming model year, Land Rover has been mulling over the idea of renaming certain vehicles in its lineup. With a new model coming out in 2015, the automaker has plans to name it "Discovery," which would create another sub-brand like Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Freelander SUV, known in the U.S. as the LR2, may have its successor named under the Discovery/LR4 moniker. It will be larger than the outgoing model, and would offer a seven-seat model. By changing the name, Land Rover would make shopping the brand simpler, as the company offers their vehicles in a "three pillar" design strategy. The Range Rover models fall under the "luxury" category, the Defender is "dual purpose," and the current Freelander and Discovery come under the "leisure" category. Land Rover has not commented on the possibility of renaming the upcoming Freelander model, but when looking at the model after all costs have been factored in, the Freelander remains the only model that doesn't bring in a profit. Changing the name may help to boost sales. The replacement models will be built on the current Freelander steel platform at the Halewood plant in Liverpool, England.
