Lexus Teases Concept for Frankfurt Motor Show; Could it be RC Super Coupe?

By Jacob Brown | August 20, 2013
Here's a headlight. Here's what we know about it: At next month's Frankfurt Auto Show, Lexus is showing off a new concept car. After seeing a Lexus IS convertible outfitted with a roll cage and driving the Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack some months back, we're inclined to speculate that whatever we're about to see is likely going to be a new coupe. Our guess is that this concept version is an exaggerated version of what is anticipated to be the Lexus RC coupe, a hotted-up version of the next Lexus IS two-door that's anticipated to do battle with the BMW 4 Series/M4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class/C63 AMG. The car is expected to continue using a 5.0-liter V-8 and an eight-speed transmission, although further enhancements could bring forth any number of smaller, turbocharged engines. Also at Frankfurt, Lexus will be debuting its new GS 300h, a four-cylinder hybrid variant that will share much if its powertrain with the U.S. market's Lexus ES 300h. During our week with a 2013 Lexus ES 300h, we recorded huge fuel economy numbers, averaging 35.6 mpg in a car about the size of Rhode Island. The GS 300h should help Lexus break into a segment that has long championed diesel engines in Europe. We'll see soon enough. We'll also see if the smaller powertrain complement to the GS 350 and GS 450h will make its way to the U.S. eventually. With fuel economy numbers being forced to creep up because of government legislation, we wouldn't doubt seeing the GS 300h in the U.S. eventually. Source: Lexus
