Lexus Teases New "F" High-Performance Model Ahead of Detroit; Are You the RC F Coupe?

By Jacob Brown | December 10, 2013
Certainly not the cars themselves, but rather the technology itself, compact high-performance vehicles got a little stale over the last few years. Think about it: There was a known formula for BMW, Audi, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and whatever other automaker got into building a small, fast luxury vehicle. Stick a V-8 engine into it, perhaps the most dynamic suspension technology your company has as well, and double the base price. Now, Cadillac and BMW are reportedly ditching V-8 muscle in their entry-sized sports coupes for turbocharged six-cylinder power. Audi did it a long time ago. Mercedes-Benz is discontinuing its 6.3-liter V-8 that's in the C63 AMG, not surprisingly because it manages just 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway. But Lexus? Lexus is curiously reportedly sticking with its 5.0-liter V-8 from the Lexus IS F sports sedan for its next-generation F model that's set to be released at January's Detroit Auto Show. Teased in the shot above, what we believe to be the Lexus RC F coupe will sport a 430-plus-horsepower V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission, putting power to the pavement via its rear wheels. The 2015 Lexus RC F has been seen testing around Germany's famed Nurburgring for some months now, wailing like the banshee that it is. It will signal the next wave of sporting models for Lexus following the discontinuation the Lexus IS F. We expect that model to get a reboot, however, and share its basic driving parts with the RC F. Recently, Lexus has mulled the idea of rolling out a successor to the Lexus LFA supercar and perhaps build a luxury coupe to replace the long-missed SC300 and SC400 of the 1990s. Of course, with rumors of a Toyota Supra successor making its way to Detroit next month, it would make sense for Lexus to amortize some of the costs as it did the last time around. We'll be interested to see how it all goes. In the meantime, we just have this picture, but we'll be sure to add more to it when we have that information to share. Source: Lexus
