Los Angeles Top City for Providing Public Transportation to Carless Residents

By Sam Grossman | August 19, 2011
If you’re an Angeleno and opt for public transportation, or another mode of transportation, rather than owning a vehicle, you are not alone. The Brookings Institution recently compared the 100 largest U.S. metro areas for the number of households with no cars and no access to transit, and ranked them based on the effectiveness of their public transit system. At the top of the list was none other than Los Angeles. This may surprise many who view LA as traffic-ridden and car-cultured, but not the report's author, Adie Tomer, who told the Huffington Post he wasn't at all surprised. "The reality is, it's a really good transit culture too when it comes to the ability to get on the bus." Those surprised by these findings are probably wondering how New York isn't number one. In terms of residents that completely forgo buying a car, New York's 2,065,904 handily beats LA's355,457. On the other hand, the number of those carless that use the public transit system is in LA's favor; 99.1 percent compared to 98.7 percent. The survey also found the worst cities that get residents to work by way of public transit. These include Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and St. Louis. Be thankful Angelenos, because in these cities, getting on a bus is not an option. Source: laist.com
