Lotus may be known for its super sports cars like the special-edition Elise and Exige, but it may become known for something else -- an engine designed specifically for use in hybrid vehicles. Called the “Range Extender Engine, ” the small and compact 1.2 liter, three-cylinder all-aluminum engine is intended to recharge the batteries in an electric vehicle like the Chevrolet Volt. Lotus says that as many as 17 parts have been eliminated including the head gasket. The Range Extender Engine can run on high-octane gasoline, ethanol, or methanol and features an integrated generator that produces 47 hp or 37 kW of power. via Automobile Magazine
