Mercedes-Benz Chief Says Company Will Outsell BMW

By | October 22, 2013
The rivalry between German automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz continues to mount. Mercedes-Benz has stated that it will outsell BMW and to be the luxury sales leader in 2013. Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, claims the company will win without any "shenanigans." Currently, Mercedes is in the lead through September, but only by a margin of less than 3,000 units. But Cannon believes with the introduction of the new CLA-Class that recently went on sale and the redesigned 2014 S-Class that Mercedes can beat out BMW. Looking back to last year, both automakers were in the same position, but BMW fought back and managed to outsell Mercedes-Benz by over 9,000 units in December 2012. "We're not going to play that game. No shenanigans. We're a shenanigan-free environment," Cannon said to Automotive News. Mercedes-Benz is not planning to have an end-of-the-year sale to stack its numbers to outsell BMW; instead, the automaker plans to play by the rules.
Although BMW didn't comment on the "shenanigans" of the past, a spokesman did send in an email saying, "BMW is heading for a record year in the U.S. with the new 4 Series and the new X5 adding to our momentum in the fourth quarter. We'll see the final results in January. It's not our place to comment on the business of our competitors." It seems both companies are thirsty to outsell the other by the end of the year, but will Mercedes be able to hold on to its slight lead in the coming months?
