Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV Planned for Frankfurt Debut

By Matthew Askari | July 05, 2013
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 will debut this September in the U.S., followed by the all-wheel-drive version, the S550 4MATIC, expected in November. But according to a new report, there may be more. It appears Mercedes-Benz is planning a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle version of the S-Class, one that will debut in two month's time at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Paragraphimage According to the UK's Autocar, the Mercedes-Benz S550 PHEV is expected to get similar emissions figures as the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, possibly even edging Porsche's grand plug-in. The S550 Plug-in will employ a V-6 engine mated to an electrical battery that will be stored in the trunk. More than half of all global sales of the previous S-Class hybrid were in China, a market that will surely be crucial for the S-Class on the whole. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the automaker's highest expression of luxury, comfort, and safety. The S-Class safety portfolio includes features such as a Brake Assist System that can detect crossing traffic and pedestrians. An active lane-keeping assist feature helps you stay on track, while a thermal imaging camera has been added to improve Night View Assist Plus, which can spot potential dangers posed by pedestrians or animals in unlit areas. The S550 will rely on a twin-turbocharged V-8, capable of producing 455 hp, and boasting a very quick 0-60 mph time of just 4.8 seconds. When it goes on sale in September, the S-Class will carry along with it a starting price of just under $100,000 we believe. Source: Autocar
