Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive is the Most Powerful AMG Vehicle Ever
When we saw the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive that debuted today at the Paris Motor Show, the first thing we thought was, "Wow, that's really blue." Then we got to the numbers sheet. It should be amazing. That's because it'll have nearly 750 horsepower combined coming from an electric motor at each wheel. It also makes 738 pound-feet of torque from idle—the pulling force that Mercedes-Benz claims will rocket the SLS AMG Electric Drive to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds. Oh, the joys of electric motors. With numbers like those, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive is set to become the most powerful regular-assembly AMG car ever produced, toppling even Mercedes' twin-turbocharged V-12 cars for output. Mercedes-Benz also proudly touts the fact that it'll do all of this without producing any emissions and uses Formula 1 racing technology. No range estimates have been given yet, but we're not expecting any big numbers in light of how this car will be used. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive doesn't yet have a specific production date, but it'll likely be joined by the BMW i8 and a scant few other electric sports cars when it makes it to production. Already Mercedes-Benz owns a minority stake in all-electric automaker Tesla Motors, and we're betting that automaker had something to do with the powertrain development. We know it did on the other vehicles the automaker also brought to Paris: the B-Class Electric Drive and Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. Mercedes-Benz says the B-Class Electric Drive should be able to go more than 120 miles on a single charge of electricity, but we'll see when it comes stateside. Because, much as the same case with the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell B-Class we recently drove, it is coming here. It's just a matter of when. Source: Mercedes-Benz
