Mercedes-Benz Targeting 30,000 CLA Sales, Another C-Class?
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is the automaker's new entry-level sedan, and represents a new direction for the automaker in the U.S. The Mercedes-Benz CLA is now the only front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz model available in the U.S., and will be joined by the GLA crossover--built using the same architecture--late next year. We recently drove both the 2014 CLA250 and the CLA45 AMG performance model, and came away impressed. Mercedes apparently believes that buyers in the U.S. will, too. According to a report in Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz CEO Steve Canon is targeting sales of 30,000 CLA models within a few years."We did not come to a volume price point to do niche volume. As we ramp up, we see the volume potential of at least 30,000 over the course of time," Canon said in the report. The volume price he is referring to is the CLA's starting price of $29,900, one that surprised many of us in the industry. Add the $925 delivery fee, and a few options, and you'll quickly find yourself around $35,000, a price Mercedes says will be about the average. At a breakfast during the launch of the CLA, Canon told us that in focus groups, after people had driven the CLA, they guessed it would cost between $50,000-$60,000. Canon added that eventually, he hoped the CLA would see the sales volume of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which is around 75,000 units per year. He did not specify a timeframe.The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, capable of 208 hp. A 4Matic, all-wheel drive version will be available next spring. For those that are looking for more performance, the CLA45 AMG boasts the world's most powerful four-cylinder engine. The twin-turbo 2.0-liter makes an incredible 355 hp, and boasts a 0-60 mph a just over 4 seconds. The CLA250 is currently on sale now, with AMG models expected to hit showrooms later next month.
