Mitsubishi to Focus on SUVs, Trucks, and EVs for Continued Growth

Although Mitsubishi is increasing in profitability, it still has a long way to go in the U.S. market. Its aging product lineup and heavy competition have hindered growth. Despite its struggles in recent years, the Outlander and Outlander Sport models have been bright spots in Mitsubishi's lineup, and the automaker is banking on these models for its future success. Pickups, SUVs, and crossovers represent the majority of global sales for Mitsubishi. In the U.S., the Outlander Sport SUV is the automaker's most popular model, up 20 percent last month and accounting for over 40 percent of total sales. The company is currently working on the next-generation of this model as well as the Pajero and Delica D:5 in other markets. Mitsubishi is also looking to expand its EV offerings beyond the i-MiEV small car. By 2020, it is hoping to increase its product ratio of EVs and plug-in hybrids to 20 percent of its total lineup. To achieve this goal, it will produce a compact plug-in crossover and a large plug-in hybrid SUV. Its EV models are expected to drive longer on a single charge than its previous EVs.
