Mitsubishi to Unveil 3 Concept Cars at Tokyo Motor Show

By Matthew Askari | October 08, 2013
We're only weeks away from the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, and in anticipation, Mitsubishi is teasing images of three concept vehicles. The automaker says the concepts--a small crossover, an SUV, and a MPV--will represent a new design identity, one that symbolizes the sense of security and functionality of an SUV. The three Mitsubishi concepts are said to boast advanced technologies that embody environmental responsibility, driving pleasure, toughness, and safety. Paragraphimage Mitsu's first concept, and the one we can see most clearly in the renderings, is the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV. The nomenclature is an acronym for Grand Cruiser Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The GC-PHEV is meant to combine SUV driving dynamics with class-leading environmental performance. Underpinning the SUV will be Mitsubishi's all-wheel drive system, S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control). The Japanese automaker says the Concept GC-PHEV will be a "connected car," and feature next-generation safety technologies, perhaps similar to the updated Subaru EyeSight system we recently reported on. Paragraphimage The Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV, or "Crossover Runner," will offer nimble drivability and a sport coupe body style, while maintaining a focus on fuel efficiency. The Mitsubishi Concept AR, or "Active Runabout" will offer the mobility of an SUV with the occupant space of an MPV. Powering the Concept AR will be a downsized turbocharged engine, maximized for efficiency and performance. We expect to get more details on the three Mitsubishi concepts as we near the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show later next month. Source: Mitsubishi
