Motor Trend Pits Ford SVT Raptor Against Dodge Ram Runner for Baja Supremacy

By Jacob Brown | August 09, 2012
Pickup trucks commercials used to show us what a vehicle could haul as it trudged up a mountain, likely set to Bob Seger music. Today, trucks are supposed to be like sports cars, only off-road. We're moving more toward prerunner, Baja racing-style trucks. And automakers are moving with the trend. First to strike was Ford with the SVT Raptor F-150, a purpose-built off-roader with 411 horsepower from a 6.2-liter V-8 engine. With Fox Racing shocks, the Raptor could handle high-speed jumps and running through the desert with ease. Its first—and so far only—serious competitor was the Dodge Ram Runner, an aftermarket kit sold by Chrysler's Mopar unit that hooks it up with meatier tires and similar Fox shocks. So which is better? To figure that out, Motor Trend's Mike Febbo and off-road racing driver Joe Bacal took the two trucks to the Las Vegas desert, running them through a course, over dunes, and on-road to see how they fared. If you get to the part about going off-road but don't understand why they'd be on the streets, it stands to reason that there would have to be a way to get from one place to another, and most people can't afford to have a truck hauled everywhere. In the end, which truck won? We're not going to spoil it for you. Check out the video below to see for yourself. Source: Motor Trend via YouTube
