New Volvo XC90 Trotting Out "Delightful Refreshments" Ahead of 2014 Redesign

By Jason Davis | May 04, 2012
The current Volvo XC90 premium SUV is in its tenth year. By modern automotive model cycle standards, that's about two generations—or 6-7 years—outdated. But with a new company direction revealed last winter and with the parent company acquisition a year prior to that, Volvo has seemingly placed great interest in revamping the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover and other models before its flagship SUV. And that's the case here, with the 2013 Volvo XC90, which has received what Volvo calls are "delightful refreshments" ahead of its pending redesign. The result is the most significantly updated XC90 since its launch. The seven-row SUV receives body-matched front and rear bumpers, moldings and wheel arches, LED daytime running lights and taillights, a silver front bumper bar, and 18-inch alloy wheels, plus two new colors. Inside, there are new sanded silver aluminum inlays, white instrumentation lighting and a leather strap on the tailgate, as well as rain sensor windshield wipers and headlight washers. Upgraded trims have red wood inlays and gearshift knob and new floor mats. For the big bucks, the Volvo XC90 R-Design benefits from a color-coordinated exterior and LED daytime running lights and taillights. To stand out from the lesser models, there are new 19-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, an R-Design grille, leather seating surfaces with embossed R-Design logo, an R-Design steering wheel, and watch dial instruments and floor mats. Of course, all XC90's continue to feature the venerable 240-hp 3.2-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission. For the snowbirds, all-wheel drive is optional on all models, though stability and traction controls are standard. Prices begin at $40,395 for the base model 3.2, and $43,195 for the R-Design.
