Next-Generation Buick Verano Details Spilled; Hybrid Coming in 2016

By Jacob Brown | October 20, 2011
The 2012 Buick Verano hasn’t even gone on sale yet, but we already have details of the next-generation of Buick’s new premium compact sedan. In 2015, the Verano will receive a major refresh after four model years on the market for the 2016 model year. At that time, Buick is expected to drop its 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in favor of the 2.5-liter, 190-horsepower four-cylinder engine found in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. While that seems like a whole lot of trouble in re-engineering the car for not much gain, the next-generation Ecotec engine family is expected to deliver significantly better refinement and efficiency over the engine series in the Verano. That will likely include improving upon the new car’s 31-mpg highway fuel economy rating. But if such assurance isn’t enough, Automotive News says the next-generation 2016 Verano will receive a hybrid powertrain with the 2.5-liter engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission to aid with efficiency. In the 2013 Malibu Eco, GM has stated that a similar engine setup in the bigger vehicle is good for around 38 mpg on the highway. Although knowing that there are still five years to ready the design before a sharp uptick in government-mandated fuel economy averages, we expect the Buick Verano to achieve significantly better figures. Built on the GM’s Delta platform that also underpins the Chevrolet Cruze, the Buick Verano is expected to remain that platform through March 2020, including its major reworking mid-decade. After such time, the next small Buick sedan will debut on a new platform in what will likely be a new dedicated car to tackle the government’s 54.5 mpg corporate average rating. Designed from many lofty materials, the seating arrangement of the new Verano looks very luxurious, and there is no wonder that it sets a new standard in the seating comfort.
