OnStar's First Assist Gets Emergency Medical Dispatch Accreditation
OnStar is the first non-emergency service to be recognized by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch as a Medical Accredited Center of Excellence. The First Assist program allows specially trained emergency advisers to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch services to drivers and passengers waiting for first responders to arrive. Recently, these advisers have had to walk a woman through labor, give CPR instructions to a young child, and instruct someone on how to stop excessive bleeding while waiting for help. In order to receive the above accreditation, the OnStar First Assist team had to meet the association's 20 points of accreditation requirements. The OnStar team also complies with the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS), a medically approved protocol that determines the urgency of a situation. There are 2,780 other agencies that use this protocol, many of which are 911 call centers, but only 4.25 percent have achieved accreditation. "This Accreditation puts OnStar in rare company. The fact that our emergency advisers are able to offer instructions that meet the rigorous standards set by the IAED is a testament to how seriously we take this responsibility to help our customers and how hard these advisers work," said Terry Inch, COO of OnStar, General Motors Global Connected Consumer in a recent interview. OnStar's First Assist program began in 2010, and is used 1,200 times per month, from treating diabetic shock to poisonous snakebites. The MPDS is the most widely used standardized medical dispatch protocol system and serves 600 million people worldwide, saving thousands of lives annually. Advisers are extensively trained, have an exemplary OnStar track record, internal OnStar Emergency courses, CPR certification, IAED certification, and more. This program received a Gold Edison Award for best new Personal Safety/Security service in 2012. Source: General Motors
