Photo of the Day: Dodge Charger SRT8
Talk about a world changer. As you're aware, we're more of a consumer operation, so when available, the cars we choose to drive and review tend to be the budget, economy, or bread and butter offerings. Sometimes, though, we don't really have a choice--we get what's available in the media fleet. Like here, with this 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 and all 470 glorious hemi ponies under its hood. I say world changer because I grew up a Honda guy. Even today, I prefer small, lightweight cars. This broiling rage of 'Murika was the first V-8 I've ever driven, and holy… uhm, wow! The engine growl was captivating even at idle, and the gloog-gloog-gloog burble demands obeisance from even lesser, exotics. When let loose, the tires and pavement joined in accord before slamming my neck into the seat cushion. The Charger SRT8 is not just fast, it's brutally quick. And it's a sensation that every motorist should experience at least once in his or her life. In most instances, though, this sort of hedonistic bravado is unbecoming of our publication. Imagine my astonishment then, that on the way back from a photo shoot in the mountains, a former associate and me averaged 24-mpg highway. In a 470-hp V-8! Is that even possible? Photographically, everything here was perfect: great sense of an empty road, spirit of the car's speed and capability, the framing, the sharpness, and just that perfect early-morning light. The only questions left are, can we get another one, and where should we go?
Have you ever owned a vehicle that you loved so much you wished you could build your house around it?
