Pontiacs throughout the Ages
Well, it’s happened. Another General Motors brand has been whacked! This time it's Pontiac. No doubt there were sorrowed fans when Oldsmobile was put to death. But we think Pontiac had a much larger following. The American story as told through our automobiles has suffered a major blow. Here’s some Pontiacs that wowed the folks over at AOL during their day: 1926 Pontiac 6/27: What turned on fans way back when was the six cylinder engine when most cars of its time carried a four cylinder. 1959 Pontiac Bonneville: This particular Pontiac was the first to show off the split grille and wide track designs which became synonymous with the brand. There was a Bonneville from this point until 2005. 1970 Pontiac GTO: “Little GTO” are the melodic notes of the song that comes to mind whenever I see those three letters so positioned. Some may or may not remember that it was the GTO that had “Ram Air,” a high tech (at the time) air induction system that offered more air pressure the faster the vehicle moved. And it is said that this car was the pet project of one John DeLorean! 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am SE: If you remember the movie “Smokey and The Bandit,” then you remember the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am SE. And so does Burt Reynolds. 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am K.I.T.T.: Yep! the K.I.T.T. Car from television. Easy to see why Pontiac was the subject of song, movies and TV series during its hey days. And let’s not forget that the K.I.T.T. car came back for a new run most recently. 1984 Pontiac Fiero: Pontiac tried to be bold. But it got kicked in the pants. Still, there are fond memories of this little mid-engined car with plastic body panels and space frame chassis. 2001 Pontiac Aztek: This vehicle tried to change the concept of an SUV. Instead of using a truck, it featured a minivan platform and many didn’t like its “disconnected” exterior design. Still, it did wow a segment of the market and it went on until 2005. 2006 Pontiac Solstice: This car won over the critics when it was introduced in concept form at the 2001 North American international Auto Show. Myth has it that Bob Lutz personally rushed the construction of the car getting it done in just months so that it could be debuted at the Show. Everybody loved it! and it became a production model in 2006. 2008 Pontiac G8 GXP: This car was supposed to be the future of Pontiac in a lot of enthusiasts’ eyes. It was designed along with Holden of Australia. The rear-wheel drive sedan was top performance for an affordable price.via AOL
