Recall Alert: More Than 214,000 Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep Vehicles Heading Back for Repairs

Earlier today Chrysler Group LLC announced a recall of approximately 9,300 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks, most of which are still in dealer hands, to inspect parking brakes and reset them according to the appropriate specifications. Also on the list of recalls is the Ram 3500 for an engine cover that could overheat and lead to a fire under the hood. Thanks to a routine internal audit of the 2013 Ram 1500 pickups, the small number of vehicles with parking brakes that didn't comply with the mandated performance standards were discovered. A further investigation showed six field reports alleging insufficient parking brake functions, however Chrysler is unaware of any accidents or injuries in relation to the brake issues. The pickup trucks with the non-compliant parking brakes have been traced to a production window starting on December 17, 2012 and closing on January 22, 2013. Inspections and repairs will be done at no cost to owners and will be contacted directly by Chrysler Group. 6,600 of the affected vehicles are in the US, while 2,400 more are in Canada and 90 in Mexico. The remaining trucks are out of the NAFTA region.
For the Ram 3500, Chrysler noted that a fire broke out under the hood of a prototype Ram 3500 during testing in February. Chrysler engineers saw that the engine cover was trapping too much heat on the passenger side of the engine. Also founds was that the engine compartment can overheat if the cover isn't positioned properly. Chrysler will notify customers at the end of May, with most of the vehicles still in dealer hands. Chrysler has announced other recalls including:
  • 2011-2012 Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Charger. Chrysler needs to replace the driver and passenger seat airbag wiring harness on 119,497 vehicles.
  • 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty; 61,409 vehicles may need a bracket to support the rear edge of the tunnel heat shield.
  • 2012 Jeep Patriot and Compass. Chrysler needs to fix a condition on 20,532 vehicles that can interrupt the flow of fuel from the secondary side of the fuel tank to the primary side, causing engine stalls.
  • 2013 Dodge Dart. The rear brake calipers on 46 Darts need to be replaced as they came from the wrong batch of parts and cause the brake cables to rub on the tire.
