Recall Alert: 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV Recalled Over Faulty Air Bag Sensor
Mitsubishi is recalling all 2012 i-MiEV units assembled between November 4, 2011, and December 22, 2011 over concerns of a defective air bag sensor. The potential number of vehicles affected is believed to be 261 units. While that number doesn't sound large, there have been 446 i-MiEV units sold at the conclusion of June 2012. The problem at hand concerns an incongruity between the air bag sensors and the on-board self-diagnostic software which will disconnect the front and side air bag system entirely. In the event that the systems do disconnect, the SRS warning light will light up in the instrument cluster. This is an issue because if the air bag system is disconnected, both the side and curtain air bags will fail to deploy in the event of an accident. To correct this issue, Mitsubishi is recalling select i-MiEV units, alert dealers, and contact owners who are believed to be in position of a vehicle in question. Dealers will then replace the defective air bag system with a new unit free of charge. Mitsubishi has yet to say when it plans on contacting the owners but concerned owners can call the automaker directly at (800) 222- 0037. The reference number for this recall is SR-12-003. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also fielding calls over this recall and can be reached at (888) 327-4236 and reference NHTSA campaign number 12V372000. Originally unveiled at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV (or Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle when in long-form) went on sale in early December 2011. The west coast was the first area to get a taste of Mitsu's little electric egg with specific states including California, Oregon, and Washington. Hawaii also got the i-MiEV at the same time. Mitsubishi hung a starting price tag of $29,125 when dressed in the SE trim on the 2012 i-MiEV. Source: Safecar
