Recall Alert: 2013 BMW M5, M6 Have Defective Oil Pump, Production Halted

BMW has found a "manufacturing defect" with the oil pump used in both its 2013 M5 and M6 models. With the discovery of this defect, BMW will be recalling select vehicles and halting production of the super sports cars, which  encompasses the M5 sedan and the M6 coupe as well as the convertible. More specifically, the vehicles that are being recalled rely on a turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine. If one of the M vehicles contains a faulty oil pump, engine pressure could drop dramatically, giving way to severe damage to the mill. The oil pump in question was discovered during the German automaker's quality checks. All affected models were assembled between July and September of this year. As a result of this defect, BMW has advised owners of each respective model to hold off from driving their vehicle until a solution has been discovered. There's no word yet on how or what BMW will do exactly to remedy the situation with customers who have gotten their hands on a 2013 M vehicle. The German automaker has, however, advised owners not to drive their vehicles for the time being and told dealerships to stop taking deliveries of the vehicles, too. The turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine is quickly becoming known as one of the most powerful engines to ever live in an M vehicle. The new engine boosts 10 percent more power than the V20 engine it replaces and fuel consumption is undercut by an additional 30 percent. Our in-office co-horts over at Motor Trend recently paired the 2013 BMW M5 against a 2013 Porsche Panamera GTS and while we won't spoil it, one of the aforementioned vehicles was readily handled. We also had a chance to drive the 2013 BMW M5 around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and surrounding areas. It did nothing short of impress associate editor Jacob Brown. "Carbon brakes or not, manual or automatic transmission, it's nearly impossible to pick an undesirable version of this car," says Brown. "The only thing that's really possible to screw up is its color." The 2013 BMW M5 will set you back at least $90,000 while the M6 coupe requires a minimum of $106,000.
