Rumor Mill: Mitsubishi Eclipse Getting Second Chance?

By Matthew Askari | September 30, 2011
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is six feet under, but rumor has it there's a knock in the coffin. According to a recent report, the once popular sports coupe may once again be popular, that is, if it's popular. An official close to Mitsubishi says the built-for-America sports coupe, which experienced two decades here and sold close to a million units, may be produced once again if there is demand. Mitsubishi Eclipse sales peaked in 2002, dropping sharply until its demise. The auto market went in all sorts of directions in the early part of the decade, with SUVs and crossovers gaining in popularity, and hybrid vehicles experiencing some early traction. To be fair, the Eclipse was a trooper, with competitors like the Honda Prelude, Acura RSX and Ford Probe meeting a similar fate years before Mitsubishi's performance sport coupe. While there is constantly talk of those models coming back, Mitsubishi admits there would have to be a strong market demand before such plans could commence. With more efficient engines being produced, and a trend away from the bulky condo-on-wheels SUVs of the previous decade, a case could be made for a comeback. What do you think? A) Yes! Let the Eclipse be, let it be. B) RIP Mitsubishi Eclipse. 1989-2011 Source: Wards Auto
