Rumored: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette to Get Eight-Speed Automatic
For those of you wishing for an eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, your prayers have been answered. The engineering gods over at General Motors have decided to employ an Aisin eight-speed automatic gearbox in the latest Vette, as well as upcoming Cadillac models. At least, until General Motors feels comfortable using its own eight-speed automatic. Sister publication Motor Trend has discovered that GM is quietly chipping away at an eight-speed automatic transmission that's being developed in house to help boost fuel economy across GM's portfolio. This new eight-speed automatic transmission will fit front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive models and is expected to help with the upcoming Federal mileage restraints. This transmission is rumored to be like nothing General Motors has ever tackled before, and we expect it to debut on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. However, there's a catch; these eight-speed automatic transmissions from GM aren't ready just yet. So, while GM continues to prep it, an Aisin transmission with the same number of gears will serve in its place. GM continues to do more looking before it finally leaps because, as is expected with Cadillac, these will move in high volume. In the short term, the ATS, the upcoming and all-new CTS, and, of course, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette are all expected to use the Aisin variant for the time being. GM's deal with Aisin, which is partially owned by Toyota and currently produces eight-speed auto gearboxes, has a year-long shelf life. After the one year deal expires, GM's eight-speed automatic transmission is expected to step in and take over in rear-wheel drive products. While we expect this new eight-speed auto gearbox to appear in models like the Cadillac ATS, CTS, and the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, there's no word yet on whether or not it will make its way over to GM's full-size truck stable. It's also unknown at this time when the eight-speed automatic will be outfitted for front-wheel drive based cars, but we're putting money on the new XTS to be one of the first models. We also expect to see this new gearbox on the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala and the Buick LaCrosse as both aforementioned vehicles, along with the XTS, are all based on the same basic architecture. As soon as we learn more details, we'll pass them on to you so stay tuned. Source: Motor Trend
