Rumored: Production Audi Quattro Coupe Concept to Debut in Frankfurt

By Matthew Askari | June 18, 2013
When it first appeared at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the Audi Quattro Coupe concept was to be a celebration of the automaker's famous all-wheel-drive coupe, a modern interpretation alluding to a rich racing heritage, melding newer styling with classic cues. The result was a much lauded success. But the Audi Quattro Coupe was left to meander over to the concept land of what-could-have-been, until now. According to Germany's Autozeitung, the Quattro Coupe will be heading to production, and a Frankfurt Auto Show debut is expected. Paragraphimage This would of course be colossal news, as it's also rumored the production version would ditch the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine of the concept--a direct homage to the Ur-Quattro, which served as inspiration for the concept along with the Audi RS5--in favor of a twin-turbocharged V-8. The site suggests the V-8 could deliver as much as 650-hp, with a little tweaking. Audi currently employs versions of this engine in the S7 and S8, but the Quattro Coupe would use the latest lightweight aluminum, metals, and carbon fiber materials, in addition to sporting a smaller frame. But we'd be cautious to expect such lofty power figures. We recently got behind the wheel of several of the automaker's tried and true Audi R8 supercars. The top-of-the-line Audi R8 V10 Plus we drove delivered 25-hp more than the regular R8 V10, at 550 hp. For the a production Quattro Coupe to deliver more than Audi's halo sports car would surprise us. The Audi Quattro Coupe would have a starting price just below the Audi R8. We expect to get more details as we near the Frankfurt Auto Show. Source: Autozeitung
