Spied! 2014 Chrysler 100 Seen Testing with Heavy Front-End Camouflage

When Fiat acquired Chrysler back in 2009, CEO Sergio Marchionne promised vehicles would be shared between all the brands under the company's umbrella. This couldn't be more obvious than in the upcoming 2014 Chrysler 100, which was caught wearing a camouflaged front-end by our spy photographer . This early 100 test mule appears to be using a Alfa Romeo Giulietta body, but still sports the customary waterfall Chrysler grille up front. Chrysler is no stranger to using a thinly veiled Alfa Romeo-bodied car as a test mule to evaluate major mechanical components. When developing the Dart, Chrysler also employed a Giulietta body for testing. Jeep has also used the Giulietta as a test pilot for some of its upcoming Liberty and Compass crossover replacement set to debut in the coming years. The 2014 Chrysler 100 is the latest Alfa Romeo test mule to hail from Auburn Hills, and we expect to see more of it as research and development continue. While details are limited, we do know that the 100 test mule is riding on the same underpinnings that support the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart. It's unclear if the 100 will come strictly as a hatchback or if a different body style will be offered as well. For now, this test mule is in hatchback form and there's noticeable styling cues taken from the Alfa.
As for what's under the hood, that's all speculation too but we expect a powertrain selection similar to what's found in the Dart. A 2.0-liter inline-four may be used to power the 100 but early rumor has it that Chrysler is pondering whether or not to throw a small V-6 engine in to attract those also looking at a Mercedes-Benz A-Class. This V-6 would also help the 100 separate itself from its Dodge counterpart, something Marchionne has been wanting to do with Chrysler and Dodge. Production of the 100 is believed to begin in the first half of 2013 at Chrysler's Belvidere, Ill. assembly facility where the Dart is built too. As always, stay tuned as more details emerge.

The Chrysler 100 needs NOT to be a hatchback. A Dart hatchback is fine, but the Chrysler 100 needs to be a sedan NOT sharing the Dart's body.
