Spied! 2015 BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe Head Off for Vacation in San Francisco

If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair. And have a good camera handy. Spotted in the Golden Gate City were the 2015 BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe, much to the surprise of tourists and townspeople alike. Covered in BMW's swirled camouflage, the cars have each been spotted lapping Germany's Nurburgring and undergoing evaluation in California before going on sale. But they have never before been spotted with one another. Paragraphimage The two cars will share much of their mechanical bits below the sheetmetal, including what is expected to be a twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that will boast somewhere north of 420 horsepower. Recently, reports have surfaced that the cars would be going on extreme diets, which would be welcome considering that the 2013 BMW M3 coupe weighs in at more than 3,700 pounds. To put that into perspective, that's nearly 1,000 pounds more than the first M3 that debuted in the 1980s and a good 200 pounds more than its immediate predecessor. That said, the current car is a better performer than any of the ones that have come before it. The BMW M3 and M4's power will still be routed through the rear wheels via a dual-clutch gearbox; it is expected that BMW will continue to sell a variant with a manual transmission, but that has not yet been confirmed. The cars will have carbon fiber roofs and should have performance and technology that humbles all but the mightiest sports cars. BMW just recently unveiled its 2014 4 Series coupe, which replaces its 3 Series coupe. All of the brand's sleeker, coupe-like models are being rechristened with even numbers. As that's the case, expect the first BMW M3 and M4 "concepts"--thinly veiled production cars--to debut at September's Franfurt Motor Show. From there, the production versions of BMW's intended competitors to the Audi RS 5, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and upcoming Cadillac ATS-V may make their official introduction at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
