Spied! 2015 Chevrolet Cruze Looks to Ditch Staid Styling in Favor of Sportier Looks
When it came time to review the Chevrolet Cruze, one of our biggest gripes came by way of its overly conservative styling. If you could get past it, you'd find the Cruze to be a perfectly nice compact sedan, driving confidently and getting fuel economy numbers that were too legit to quit. From our new spy shots, it looks like the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze will be getting just the makeover it needs to make sure it's at least a little memorable to look at. Its front end looks a bit like the Chevrolet Tru 140 concept that debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Its grille is much larger, with an upward-sloping front bumper and hood that transitions into a far less-upright windshield. Through the miracle of modern engineering, the cabin still appears upright, not compromising passenger room. Out back, the tail light shape looks similar to that of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala's, and there's a spoiler integrated into the trunklid, aiding aerodynamics. With the current Chevrolet Cruze rated at 28 mpg city/42 mpg in Eco guise with the six-speed manual transmission and 27 mpg city/46 mpg highway with a six-speed automatic with its new 148-horsepower diesel engine, expect Chevrolet to try and top all of those numbers in the next generation. The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze will ride on an updated version of the current car's chassis, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it drop several hundred pounds from its more than 3,000-pound weight. We don't know anything about engine choices or transmission options yet, but with GM now working on nine- and 10-speed automatic transmissions, we wouldn't be surprised if one of those makes it into the Cruze. A few months back after it was found that the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu began falling short of expectations, rumors flew that GM was discussing decontenting the 2015 Cruze to give the Malibu more breathing room, using cheaper materials in the process. The way we figure it, as one of Chevrolet's best-sellers and a leader in the compact segment--perhaps the first competitive compact Chevrolet has sold since the Japanese automakers began selling cars in volume in the U.S.--Chevrolet needs to keep the momentum going.
