Spied! Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Caught Testing, Expected to be Unveiled at 2013 Geneva Motor Show

By Trevor Dorchies | January 31, 2013
Could the automotive equivalent to a unicorn finally be making a return to the United States? If these spy shots are any indication, the long-awaited (and consistently delayed) Alfa Romeo 4C coupe destined for our shores could actually become a reality before the year is out. As we learned yesterday, Chrysler's revised product plan included an Alfa Romeo model, presumably the 4C coupe, due out later this year. These photos seemed to fit that in with that plan quite nicely. Not much is known about the stateside version of the Alfa Romeo 4C coupe but a turbocharged, direct-injection 1.8-liter inline-4 is expected to provide the power. No numbers have been released yet but it's widely accepted that this engine is rated at 230 horsepower but a 300 hp version could be in the cards, too.  No matter which engine makes the cut (if not both), it should be more than enough power to get the 4C's 2,000 pound frame going. This low weight is made possible by using light-weight materials like aluminum, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. The reintroduction of the Alfa Romeo 4C would be a major breakthrough for the brand and for parent company Fiat as well. The 4C's engine may power other vehicles like the MiTo and an unnamed crossover related to the Fiat 500X when each are introduced into the U.S. market. Chrysler's product plan showed two Alfa Romeo models being introduced, the first in 2015 and the second a year later. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta along with a Giulia sedan and wagon may also be in the cards for the states along with a Spider roadster being developed alongside the next Mazda Miata, too. While Alfa hasn't confirmed anything, rumor has it that a production version of the 4C coupe will be unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show this coming March. As is the case with Alfa Romeo and its supposed return to the U.S. market, this situation is a fluid one, so stay tuned.
