Spied! Chevrolet Corvette Z07 Caught Testing; Is Supercar Convertible on Its Way?

By Jacob Brown | September 16, 2013
We know that Chevrolet isn't done developing new C7 Corvette. First up was the 455-horsepower standard model, which is pretty gnarly unto itself. But there have always been higher-performance versions of the Corvette, and the seventh-generation sports car is no different in that respect. We're just wondering exactly what it will be like. Paragraphimage Spied here is what we anticipate will be the Chevrolet Corvette Z07, the follow-up the the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Seen with different wheels, bigger brakes, and what looks to be a rear brake duct in front of the wheels on either side, the Z07 draws stark contrast from the model that preceded it in that it'll be offered in a convertible version, at least from the looks of it. Seen testing, this soft-top follows up on what was a very limited edition car in the 2013 Corvette 427 convertible, essentially a drop-top version of the Z06. Our spy photographers studied the photos to see if perhaps Chevrolet was hiding a new hardtop underneath the canvas, but that doesn't appear to be the case. We expect power to come from either a forced-induction 6.2-liter V-8 or an updated version of its 7.0-liter V-8, with either pushing at least 600 horsepower. The C6 Corvette Z06 produced 505 horsepower from its 7.0-liter mill, but we expect the new technology adopted in the C7 generation like direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to add quite a bit more oomph. Expect to see a tiered introduction of higher-performance cars to battle the likes of the Nissan GT-R, SRT Viper, and Porsche 911 Turbo, among a long list of other supercars hovering above $100,000. After the Corvette Z07, might we see yet another ZR1, perhaps pushing more than 700 horsepower? We can only hope.
