Spied: Scion FR-S Convertible Already Behind Bars

By Trevor Dorchies | February 15, 2013
Earlier this month, Toyota announced that it will be bringing the FT-86 Open concept--or a Scion FR-S convertible, as it would be known in the states--to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. All that Toyota provided with that announcement was a sketch of what to expect but left out most of the details. Today, we have the first unofficial pictures of the Toyota GT-86/Scion FR-S convertible in the sheet metal. The photos were apparently taken from behind a fence in Cape Town, South Africa, so bars dissect the images. Still, you get the idea. No other information was provided with these photos but by the look of things, the FR-S convertible is closer to production than one may think. Even with its official debut just under a month away, it appears Toyota wants the FR-S convertible on the fast-track to production. No delivery date has been set yet, but expect to see the topless FR-S on our shores much sooner rather than later. There's also no word on whether the Subaru BRZ variant will get the same treatment as the Toyota FT-86 and Scion FR-S. As more information on the Toyota FT-86 Open concept/Scion FR-S convertible becomes available, we'll pass it along so stay tuned. Automotive.com's take: These pictures show that the FT-86 Open concept is much more than that, it's already production ready. Adding a convertible variant to Toyota and Subaru's Mazda MX-5 Miata slayer is admirable, but it's unseen whether or not it can hang with the best of them yet.
