Supercar Sunday: 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse Brings Race Car to the Road [UPDATED]

By Jacob Brown | August 04, 2013
Lamborghini has never been a maker of race cars. If you wanted a race car, you bought a Ferrari. If you wanted an attention-grabbing, absolutely psychotic supercar, you bought a Lamborghini. That said, the latest--and possibly one of the greatest--Lamborghinis to hit the market might be the biggest antithesis of the brand since it decided to make SUVs in the 1980s. Debuting at September's Franfurt Motor Show is the 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, which like other Gallardo models, has a name that by the time you say it all, you'll be nearing 100 mph. The name derives from 570 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and Squadra Corse, which means "race squad" and is the name of Lambo's new racing outfit. Paragraphimage The Squadra Corse is basically a road-going version of its Gallardo GT3 and Super Trofeo race cars, with a larger wing and lightweight carbon fiber used for the fully removable engine cover in back. The 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse weighs just 2,960 pounds, which is a good 155 pounds less than the standard Gallardo LP 560-4. That allows it to hit 62 mph from standstill in 3.4 seconds, 124 mph in 10.4 seconds, and top out at nearly 199 mph. A decal strip on the car displays red, white, and green, all the colors of the Italian national flag. The car is available in yellow, white, gray, or red with a matte black spoiler and glossy black 19-inch wheels. Brake calipers can match or contrast in black, red, or yellow. The interior is stripped down some with carbon fiber and Alcantara--synthetic suede--throughout. But comfort seats can be installed in the place of racing buckets. The 2014 Lamborghini Gallardo Squadra Corse is a swan song for the entry-level Lamborghini and will likely carry a price closer to $300,000 when it goes on sale. As it stands, the car has run through 10 years of production with changes throughout its life to constantly improve it. In chasing racing aspirations, this Gallardo might have achieved what you'd expect of Lamborghini is becoming exclusive, bombastic, and wild. That's right: Convention made it even less conventional. UPDATE: Lamborghini has announced that the Squadra Corse would be made in a limited batch of just 50 cars worldwide at a starting price of just over $260,000, not including destination and handling. Of those, 15 are headed to North America, and they will all be painted yellow. Sorry if you wanted any of the other available colors. Source: Lamborghini
