Tesla Model S Electric Car Goes On Sale Ahead of Schedule

By Joel Arellano | May 23, 2012
Last month, we posted electric car maker Tesla had moved up the delivery date of its Model S sedan from July 2012 to June. Well, Tesla announced this week that it will start deliveries of the Model S starting Friday, June 22. "In 2006 our plan was to build an electric sports car followed by an affordable electric sedan, and reduce our dependence on oil," Elon Musk, Tesla Motors CEO and Chief Product Architect, said in a statement. "Delivering Model S is a key part of that plan and represents Tesla’s transition to a mass-production automaker and the most compelling car company of the 21st century." Tesla will hand over the keys to select customers that day at its factory in Fremont, California. The supposed 6,500 pre-orders for the Tesla Model S have already been filled through 2012, with Tesla planning to deliver 5,000 vehicles by year's end. The automaker plans to launch test-drive events starting in July throughout the U.S. with interested buyers able to make reservations at the local Tesla dealership or online. Pricing on the Tesla Model S starts around $57,000 and tops around $92,000. The extra cash adds on luxury features, such as leather for $1,500, a tech package for $3,500, a panorama sunroof for $1,500, and even a parcel shelf for $150. But the Tesla Model S' big seller is its electric powertain. The Model S is a full-electric car with a potential range of over 250 miles between charges. Unfortunately, there are still no official figures from the Environmental Protection Agency, which determines such figures. Also still missing are the Tesla Model S crash test results by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Musk himself said even he didn't know when the agency would be testing the Model S or releasing its figures. Well, hopefully Tesla's pronouncements mean such figures will be issued shortly.
