The Detroit Electric SP:01 Unveiled
The Detroit Electric SP:01 is a limited edition, two-seat sports car that is purely electric. The company says it will set new standards for performance and handling, and with a top speed of 155 mph, and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds, that it will be the world's fastest pure-electric production car. The SP:01 will be built at Detroit Electric's production facility in Wayne county, Michigan to be sold worldwide. However, only 999 of these vehicles will be produced. The rear-wheel drive SP:01 owes its performance to its power-to-weight ratio. With a mid-mounted compact 201 brake horsepower electric motor and lightweight, purpose-design battery, the SP:01 only weighs 2,354 pounds, giving it impressive driving dynamics and handling. Built on a strong and lightweight aluminum chassis supplied by British sportscar manufacturer Lotus, the special edition electric vehicle has an all-new carbon-fiber bodywork, and the SP:01 also features a performance-tuned suspension, steering, and brake systems. Albert Lam, Detroit Electric's Chairman and Group CEO said in a recent interview that, "The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced. It is a milestone in the history of the Detroit Electric brand, but also a significant development for the international EV sector. The car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product, one that displays outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and which delivers an exhilarating driving experience." Standard on the SP:01 are anti-lock brakes and stability control, along with regenerative braking technology to help boost energy efficiency. This vehicle is the first production car to be marketed under the Detroit Electric brand since 1939, and is expected to go on sale by the end of August of this year, with a starting price of $135,000.
