Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall on 2003-2004 Corolla and 2006-2012 Lexus IS

Earlier today Toyota announced its plan to recall 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles, along with 270,000 Lexus IS vehicles. With the possibility that the airbag control module for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) originally manufactured are susceptible to internal shorting, there is a possibility the application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) could be damaged. What this would mean for those driving a Corolla model are airbags and/or seats belt pretensioners deploying inadvertently. The recall for the Lexus IS deals with the front wipers. It is possible the wiper arm nut may not be as tight and secure as it should be. This can make the wipers inoperative if restricted by an external load, such as heavy snow buildup. Both recalls are at no cost to the owner and can be taken care of any authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer. Owners will receive a notification letter by first class mail in the near future. As per the initial findings,Toyota found that the Integrated Circuit that control the airbag deployments gets interference by other electrical and other devices and it automatically triggers airbag deployment even when the car is safe and there is no impact. As part of the recall, the company will be fitting some electrical signal filter inside the unit that will not let the IC get interference of any kind and it will then work fine.
