Video Of The Day: Watch An an African President’s Exotic Car Collection Get Impounded

By Blake Z. Rong | September 30, 2011
Things just ain’t the same for gangstas. A recent video shot in Paris (near the Arc de Triomphe) shows a gaggle of exotica being loaded by the French police, onto one suddenly very special car carrier. Sacré bleu! There’s a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, a yellow Porsche Carrera GT, a Maserati MC12 Corsa that barely clears the flatbed, an ultra-rare Aston Martin V8 Vantage Le Mans, and a Renault Le Car. OK, maybe not that last one. But what’s not shown is the rest of the collection: a Ferrari Enzo, a bright yellow Ferrari 599 GTO, and a pair of Bugatti Veyrons, one of them decked out in all blue like a Canadian tuxedo. Somewhere out there, Vin Diesel’s character is furiously taking notes. The cars belong to Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the president of Equatorial Guinea. One of the smallest countries in Africa, it has built much of its wealth from oil, as controlled by a select few individuals (as things tend to be). In 2010, France’s Supreme Court opened an investigation to determine if Mbasogo had used state funds to buy private property in France. With the seizing of possibly two million dollars’ worth of cars along Avenue Foch—where Mbasogo has a swanky apartment—the investigators may have their work cut out for them.
