When we hear the word hybrid, our mind flickers to a land of Toyota Prius fuel-sipping runabouts. It's not that Prius isn't a good car—it is—but it's more that the connotation that doesn't automatically excite us. But when we hear Porsche is involved, our interest is naturally piqued. In episode 12 of Motor Trend's Wide Open Throttle, we get the rundown on the new Porsche 918 Spyder Plug-in Hybrid, as it's zipping around the Nardo test track in Southern Italy. The Porsche 918 Spyder is a full hybrid, but of the performance variety. The 918 boasts a 4.6-liter V-8 that on its own can crank out 570-hp. Pair that with the power derived from the electric motors, and you're staring at 770-horses, or the power of more than five Toyota Prius hybrids combined. Granted, the Porsche 918 Spyder Plug-in won't net you the excellent fuel economy of the singularly-focused Prius. But it will take you from 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds, no small feat. Wolfgang Hatz, head of research and development at Porsche, said when building this hyper-car, the automaker wanted to achieve "super high performance with super high efficiency." We don't yet have fuel economy estimates, but we'll be curious to see just how efficient Porsche can make its new Hybrid, with such impressive performance numbers. Carrying on with the theme of exciting hybrids, Motor Trend's Nate Martinez gives us the on BMW's i8 concept.
