VW Edition 35 Celebrates GTI’s 35th Anniversary
The autosphere is abuzzed with news about Volkswagen’s vaunted GTI which turns thirty-five this year. Introduced in Europe in 1976—and 1983 in the U.S. as the Rabbit GTI—the original GTI is arguably the progenitor of all modern hot hatches. After 35 years of continuous production, the GTI still manages to keep a cult following while also having mainstream appeal. The popularity of the GTI has lead VW to create the Edition 35. With a newly redesigned front bumper, VW claims that elements of classic GTI models have been incorporated into this special edition’s design. While not as aggressive-looking as last year’s GTI Excessive Concept, the Edition 35 features subtle yet distinctive styling. Exclusive multi-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels can be found at each corner, while the number “35” is the running theme of the interior—gracing the door sill plates, center seat panel and head restraints. More importantly, the Edition 35 gets a boost in power, raising output from 210 PS (207 horsepower) to 235 PS (232 horsepower). The Edition 35 will make its world debut at the famous GTI meet in Wörthersee, Germany held from June 1 to 4. At the event, VW will also display other GTI anniversary models, including the Edition 20 and Edition 30. Pricing for the Golf GTI Edition 35 starts at 30,425 Euros (or roughly $43,681 U.S.) and the model is expected to go on sale in Germany beginning in mid-June. There’s still no word on whether or not this special edition will arrive stateside, but seeing as how the U.S. never got the Edition 20 or the Edition 30, the chances are looking a bit slim. We did, however, get the “20th Anniversary Edition” in 2003, which commemorated the GTI’s 20-year anniversary in the U.S. market as well as the 337 edition a year earlier, which was virtually identical to the 25th Anniversary Edition sold in Europe. So there’s still a glimmer of hope that this car will arrive in some form or another on our shores. via Volkswagen courtesy of Motor Trend Staff
