Ward's Auto Announces 10 Best Engines for 2013, Audi, Honda, and Ford Make the Cut

By Trevor Dorchies | December 13, 2012
Ward's Auto announced its list of the 10 Best Engines for 2013, and while many of the usual suspects for the annual who's-who of powerplants were included, there were a few new ones as well. Engines from cars and light-duty trucks were evaluated for this list and for the first time in seven years, no hybrid, all-electric, or diesel engines made the cut. It would seem Ward's list goes against what automakers have been trying to perfect as of late, however, it may actually represent that gasoline-powered engines are still capable of being innovative. It also doesn't hurt that it's hard to replicate the performance from a gas-only engine.  Check out the full list of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2013 below. Audi 3.0-liter Supercharged V-6 Found in the 2013 Audi S5, the 3.0-liter TFSI supercharged V-6 engine is rated at 329 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. This engine is new for the 2013 model year and joins the 4.2-liter engine already in service. Both the V-8 and V-6 engine variants are known to feel similar in power but with two fewer cylinders, the V-6 is more forgiving at the pump. When mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2013 Audi S5 turns in 18 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. A manual transmission actually gets two miles better in the city than the automatic gearbox while a highway rating isn't available yet. Combined fuel economy with a manual transmission checks in at 26 mpg. BMW 2.0-liter Turbocharged Inline-4 BMW cracks Ward's list of the 10 Best Engines for 2013 with its 2.0-liter N20 turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. This variant, one of six gasoline engines offered in the latest round of 3 Series models, is rated at 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine is the first four-cylinder variant to be offered in the United States by BMW since 2000. BMW 3.0-liter Turbocharged Inline-6 The second entry from BMW comes in the form of a 3.0-liter N55 turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. This motivator currently does duty under the hood of the 135is coupe and like the four-cylinder found in the 3 Series, the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine was on Ward's list of the 10 Best Engines last year, too. Originally launched back in 2009, this particular engine is rated at 300 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque.  When mated to an automatic transmission, the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine is rated at 20 mpg city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. Chrysler 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 Chrysler hit a homerun when it launched the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine for select 2011 model year vehicles.  Originally, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles were available with the Pentastar V-6, but that has since expanded into the Ram lineup. For the 2013 model year, the Ram's version of the Pentastar V-6 is tuned to produce 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy figures with the Pentastar V-6 engine check in at 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. Ford 2.0-liter EcoBoost Inline-4 The first of two engine entries from the Blue Oval boys is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine found in the Taurus. This configuration is rated at 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy figures check in at 22 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined.  This same mill powers the all-new 2013 Ford Focus ST but official fuel economy figures haven't been released yet. Ford 5.8-liter Supercharged V-8 The 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 engine that powers the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 sends tires running for the hills, and is the only engine its size to make the list. This configuration lays down 662 hp, enough to peel back the earth's crust with ease, and 600 lb-ft of torque. Do you really expect fuel economy to be good in a vehicle that produces 662 hp? Good, because if you don't like visiting the fuel pump, then the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is, without question, not for you. With the 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 engine, the EPA rated the most powerful Mustang to date at 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, and even those numbers sound pretty optimistic. Cadillac 2.0-liter Turbocharged Inline-4 The 2013 Cadillac ATS enters Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2013 in its first year in production with the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine.  This configuration is found on every model level from the mid-level Luxury trim all the way up to the top-tier Premium model. The 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine is rated at  260 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy figures ring in at 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined when mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. With a manual gearbox, the 2013 Cadillac ATS turns in 19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. Honda 2.4-liter Inline-4 This past year has been kind to the 2013 Honda Accord. After being redesigned for the 2013 model year, it has received critical acclaim from various media outlets. Like Ford, Honda has two engines that made the cut on Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2013. First up is the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine which is rated at 189 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque. Honda's 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine achieves 27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined when mated to a CVT. Honda 3.5-liter V-6 The second of two Honda engines on Ward's list is the 3.5-liter V-6 mill. This configuration is also employed in the 2013 Honda Accord and is rated at 278 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque while achieving 21 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined when mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Subaru/Toyota 2.0-liter Flat-4 The 2013 Subaru BRZ also had a quietly successful year in its first of what's expected to be many years in production. A 2.0-liter Boxer engine powers the BRZ and is rated at 200 hp while achieving 25 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined when mated to six-speed automatic transmission. When hooked to a six-speed manual transmission, the BRZ turns in 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. What say you? Do you have a favorite engine on this list?
