Behind the Wheel: 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology division has apparently lost its collective mind. Name an SUV currently on sale that tips the scales at almost 5,000 pounds but drives like something half its size. As you come up with some answers, try to find one that delivers 470-horsepower, a bit of refinement, and an engine note that will make you forget you just paid about $70,000 for it. Those requirements don't leave you many options, and that's where the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes in. You don't need an SUV capable of going from 0-60 mph in under five seconds, but if you can afford one, SRT's Jeep variant is tough to overlook. We recently spent a week with SRT's big bruiser, and while fuel economy may be important to you, the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 could care less. The EPA rated Jeep's performance model at 12 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined. For comparison's sake, that's on par with the 2013 BMW X5 M, which gets the same city and combined mileage as the Grand Cherokee SRT8 but 17 mpg on the highway. The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Turbo floats around the same territory as well, with an EPA rating of 15 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is similar to its German competition in many ways, but it costs almost $20,000 than its cheapest adversary (the BMW X5 M).
