Week in Review: New, Fortified, Enriched, and High in Honda Accords, Rams, Audi R8s!

By Jacob Brown | August 11, 2012
In last week's Week in Review, we mentioned that was just hitting the tip of the iceberg with the new vehicle introductions. Now it looks like we're starting to go full speed ahead. And to think, it's not going to slow down again until early next year. It's a good time to be following the auto industry, whether you're in it for the soap opera-like office strife, the new cars, and trucks coming out, or the ones already on sale. This week's all about the new stuff. How it all holds up remains to be seen. Paragraphimage Monday, August 6 The 2013 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman sounds like a rough and tumble, do-it-all truck for the sort that listens to Lynyrd Skynyrd, has a decent-sized gun collection, and has a freezer full of venison from last year's haul still. Yeah, it's got a Hemi. Yeah, it'll go off-road pretty well, too, with heavy-duty shocks, skid plates, a 3.92 axle ratio for low-range torque, 390 horsepower, and either a six-speed automatic or a new eight-speed auto. After a two-year hiatus, the Outdoorsman comes back with a vengeance. We'll have First Drive impressions of the 2013 Ram up shortly. Paragraphimage Tuesday, August 7 The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe comes to the U.S. later this year as the third generation of the automaker's popular crossover. Unlike the last two versions, though, Hyundai is making the Santa Fe in two different body lengths and supplying the different models with their own unique engine options. The first out of the gate will be the short-wheelbase Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, which just got a price attached to it last week. It will start at $25,275, or $1,225 over last year's model. Checking all the boxes—and there are quite a few boxes to be checked—it can top out at nearly $36,000. So much for the notion of Hyundai being a bargain brand. Paragraphimage Wednesday, August 8 Perhaps the most important car to launch this year will be the 2013 Honda Accord. We saw it in the sheetmetal as a concept earlier this year. And we were fortunate enough to catch its plug-in hybrid version doing some late night testing near Honda's Torrance, California, headquarters. Now, we finally get to see what it looks like without the glitz of the concept car or the vinyl wraps that come with a prototype, taking an evolution over revolution approach to its overall appearance. In just a few weeks, we'll be driving it, so we'll be able to give you a fair shakedown of how the new sedan stacks up. Stay tuned. Paragraphimage Thursday, August 9 The 2013 Audi R8 supercar is undergoing a pretty significant revision. As a result, the automaker is fortifying its existing car for one last go-around, adorning it with special paint, leather, and options. Called the Exclusive Selection edition, the last of the 2012 Audi R8 models will come with either a standard 430-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8 or a 525-horsepower, 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Both will be available with either Audi's six-speed manual transmission or six-speed sequential automated manual transmission. The V-8 comes in matte black, while the V-10 only comes in Ibis white. If you're looking at picking one up, make sure you have the better part of $200,000 on-hand for one of just 50 cars total to be made. Paragraphimage Friday, August 10 Range Rovers are generally lauded for their off-road prowess, but let's face it: Who actually takes them off-road? Suburban housewives? Wall Street high-rollers? Rappers? No, no, and no. Yet, they continue to buy them in droves. Customizer Overfinch realized this and decided to take matters into its own hands, offering up 567 horsepower from its supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine—up 57 horsepower—in addition to luxury touches galore in the Range Rover Sport GTS-X. Additionally, Overfinch is offering its Range Rover Evoque GTS with 22-inch wheels and ultra-violet paint. While the larger Range Rover Sport was debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, both will get their official introductions at next month's Salon Prive in London.
