Overview

The 1996 Nissan Altima comes with one engine, two transmission choices, and four trim levels. The five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while the four-speed automatic transmission is optional for all models except the GLE. Moreover, the sport front seats and sport suspension on the SE and GLE are two outstanding features.

Exterior

The 1996 Nissan Altima comes with lightly tinted windows and dual power remote windows. The XE and GXE have black body-side moldings, a fixed antenna, and steel wheels standard. A first row power glass sunroof is optional for the GXE and SE and standard for the GLE. Standard features for the SE and GLE include a power antenna, wing spoiler, and alloy wheels.

Interior

The 1996 Nissan Altima comes with cloth upholstery, two-way driver and front passenger seats, and tilt steering wheel standard. Other standard features include a partial floor console, lighted glove box, and cargo light. The XE and GXE come with bucket front seats, while the SE and GLE come with sport front seats. The GXE, SE, and GLE also come with power front and rear windows standard. An AM/FM/Cassette audio system and manual air-conditioning are optional for the XE and GXE.

The 1996 Nissan Altima SE receives a standard AM/FM/Cassette audio system, while the GLE has an AM/FM/Cassette/CD audio system. Both the SE and GLE have a leather steering wheel standard with the option of leather upholstery. The SE has manual air-conditioning while the GLE has automatic air-conditioning and driver and passenger vanity mirrors.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Nissan Altima's 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is capable of producing 150 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. Front and rear anti-roll bars are standard, helping to increase stability when cornering or when driving over uneven surfaces. Cruise control is optional on the XE and GXE and standard on the SE and GLE. Sport suspension tuning is also standard on the SE and GLE.

Safety

The 1996 Nissan Altima provides standard driver and passenger front impact air bags; however, anti-lock brakes are not standard and come optional for all models. The XE and GXE get standard power door locks and fixed interval windshield wipers; meanwhile, the SE and GLE get standard cornering lights, fog lights, and variable intermittent windshield wipers. A content theft-deterrent alarm system is also standard for the GLE.
