What's New

The 1997 Nissan Altima is virtually identical to the models offered in 1996, excluding the addition of emissions equipment.

Exterior

The 1997 Nissan Altima has approximately a 181-inch length, 67-inch width, 56-inch height, and 103-inch wheelbase. It sports a contemporary design, highlighted by smooth and sculpted lines. It features body-colored body side molding, body-colored front and rear impact-absorbing bumpers, power door mirrors, chrome trim and door handles, halogen bulb single headlights, a fixed rear window, and tinted glass. Optional equipment includes fog lights, a rear spoiler, and a power moon roof. Furthermore, it has a curb weight of approximately 3020 pounds and sits on 15-inch wheels.

Interior

The interior of the 1997 Nissan Altima is roomy enough to fit five passengers. In the front, there are reclining cloth bucket seats with height-adjustable head restraints, divided by a console that includes a storage area and two cup holders. Pockets in the doors and bins are on the seats for easy storage. The dash contains logically-arranged gauges for clear readability and conveniently-placed controls for easy use. In the rear, a cloth bench can seat three people. It also features power doors and windows, full carpeting, and an AM/FM stereo with a cassette player included. Leather seating and a CD player are optional.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Nissan Altima is packed with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. It is mated with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine is surprisingly powerful, allowing for smooth and strong acceleration. Zero to 60 mph can be accomplished in nine seconds, and top speed is 110 mph.

The 1997 Nissan Altima is built with an independent MacPherson strut front and rear suspension with a stabilizer bar and coil springs. This setup provides a relatively smooth and stable ride, especially on the highway. In addition, body roll is minimal during hard cornering maneuvers. Furthermore, a good steering feel allows for easy control when turning or moving around in traffic.

Safety

The 1997 Nissan Altima has driver and front passenger front-impact airbags installed. Child safety locks are used on the rear doors, and a four-wheel ABS system is optional equipment.
