Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Nissan Altima got redesigned last year to improve on some areas. The 2008 Nissan Altima continues to mimic those upgrades in terms of body style and performance. For many, the 2008 Altima embodies the heart of a high-performance sports car with the body style of a family sedan. The coupe body also joins this year’s lineup, created an additional niche for those willing to sacrifice interior space for additional performance features. When shopping for the 2008 Nissan Altima, be conscious of the many available packages that inevitably add to the final price.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, coupe
Engines: 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 3.5-liter V-6
Transmissions: manual, CVT
Models: Nissan Altima 2.5, Nissan Altima 2.5 S, Nissan Altima 3.5 SE, Nissan Altima 3.5 S

What's New

New for 2008, Nissan introduces the coupe to the Altima lineup. The coupe combines the previously integrated quality engines with a sleek and sporty body style. A variety of trim packages become available for both the sedan and the coupe. Many of the optional packages come in bundles and include upgrades you may not require. Staying with the base can be your most affordable option if you can live without details such as satellite radio and anti-lock brakes. Some available packages include improved sound systems and the latest technology for the time, like navigation systems.

Exterior

The midsize sedan and coupe body style offer different appealing features depending on your driving needs. The sedan comes in four unique trims named after their respective engines. Starting with the 2.5 base you get 16-inch wheels and keyless entry, in addition to a sleek body design. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels come standard on the 3.5 SE along with automatic headlights and a variety of signature color options. The 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL proves synonymous with luxury for its many interior appointments, in addition to xenon HID headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels on the exterior.

Interior

The interior of all 2008 Nissan Altima boasts high-quality materials and a wide variety of features suitable for almost every consumer. Standard features on the base include a tilt and telescopic steering wheel and cruise control. A CD player and air-conditioning add to the 2.5 S. Additional standard features in the 3.5 SL include leather seating, dual-zone climate control, and Bluetooth. Both the sedan and coupe offer comfortable, spacious front seats with adequate head and leg space. The back seat of the coupe remains limited on space, although it still includes three seat belts for passenger safety.

Performance & Handling

With two powerful engines to choose from it’s hard to ignore performance when shopping for the 2008 Nissan Altima. The 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine climbs to 175 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque in all of the 2.5 trims. The 3.5 versions reach 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft torque through the powerful 3.5 liter V-6. Luckily, you do not have to sacrifice fuel economy to drive the high-performance Nissan Altima with competitive fuel economy for its standard engine.

Safety

The 2008 Nissan Altima earns a top five-star rating for frontal and side impacts. Anti-lock brakes come standard on all sedans and coupes except the 2.5 S sedan. Optional stability control and standard traction control provide options for the 3.5. Some other safety features associated with the base include four-wheel ABS, emergency braking assist, rear-door child safety locks, front and rear head airbags, tire pressure monitoring, front height-adjustable headrests, and an emergency interior truck release.
