"4th Time Around" is not only the title of a Bob Dylan classic, it could be used to refer to the fourth model year of Nissan bringing us the funky wagon-like Cube hatchback. And make no mistake -- there's not much classic in this offering. The Cube returns with asymmetrical wraparound windows, a diminutive tuft of shag area-carpeting on the dash, an airy lounge feel on the inside with a folding, sliding back-seat bench, and a rear door that opens refrigerator-style.
The Cube's aesthetic is not for everyone, but if you're keen on its style elements, and performance isn't paramount, this may be the car for you. Accent lighting, a water-ripple effect, and curvy nature designed into the fabric of the roof, climate console and door handles give the interior a unique feel.
A 1.8-liter inline-four engine offers 122 hp with either the six-speed manual transmission or the CVT. The wagon will get you to where you need to go, but this isn't a performance-oriented car.
Body style: Wagon
Engines: 1.8-liter inline-4
Transmissions: six-speed manual, continuously variable automatic transmission
Models: 1.8, 1.8 S, 1.8 SL
Some new features greet the 2012 models, including a new package for the 1.8 S CVT with Nissan Navigation System, Rockford Fosgate audio, a rear-view camera, and Nissan Intelligent Key, a standard feature on the SL models. The Cube also expands its color palette with the addition of five new colors.
The Cube returns with its trademark asymmetrical wraparound windows and "refrigerator-style" rear door that allows it to open in tight spaces; 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels add flair to the 1.8 S CVT.
It's what's on the inside that counts--S and SL models can count on a new front passenger seat armrest, to go with the trademark "water-drop" ripple-effect cabin that can be seen in wavy curves present in the roof headliner and climate control system.
Performance & Handling
The Cube is not for the performance enthusiast, but the front strut/rear torsion-beam suspension will keep things comfy. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder's 122 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque are enough to get you around, if a little light on the thrills.
The Cube offers many safety features including front and front-side impact air bags, front seat active head restraints, a tire-pressure monitoring system, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution system.
