The 1996 Nissan Maxima is a sporty little sedan with a three-liter V-6 engine and a choice of two transmissions. The five-speed manual transmission is standard on the GXE and SE with the four-speed automatic transmission as optional equipment. However, the GLE can only be paired with the four-speed automatic transmission. Standard air-conditioning for all models is one outstanding feature.

The 1996 Nissan Maxima comes with few changes since it was new to the line up in 1995. Two new exterior colors are available. New options include a four-way passenger seat and a new center console cup holder.
The 1996 Nissan Maxima comes with body-colored body-side moldings, dual power remote heated mirrors, and a power antenna. A sunroof is optional for all models, while the GXE comes with steel wheels, and the SE and GLE come with alloy wheels. The SE also gets the option of a wing spoiler.
The 1996 Nissan Maxima includes standard features such as bucket front seats, full floor console, tilt steering wheel, power front and rear windows, front map lights, and a cargo light. Heated front seats are optional for all models. Meanwhile, an AM/FM/Cassette audio system is standard for the GXE and SE, with an AM/FM/Cassette/CD audio system standard for the GLE, which is available as an option for the GXE and SE. Brand speakers come standard in the GLE.
The 1996 Nissan Maxima receives standard manual air-conditioning on GXE and SE with the option of automatic air-conditioning in the SE. The GLE gets automatic air-conditioning as standard. Two-way driver and front passenger seats are standard for the GXE and SE, while the GLE has two-way powered driver and front passenger seats. Powered driver and passenger seats are optional on the SE, while only a powered driver’s seat is an available option for the GXE.
The 1996 Nissan Maxima GXE and SE have cloth upholstery as standard with leather upholstery optional for the SE. Leather upholstery is standard on the GLE. The SE and GLE both come with a leather steering wheel standard. Driver and passenger vanity mirrors are standard for the GLE and optional for the GXE and SE.
Performance & Handling
The 1996 Nissan Maxima has sport suspension tuning, allowing for a quality drive and riding experience. Front and rear anti-roll bars allow for more stability when cornering and on irregular terrain. The three-liter V-6 engine on this sedan can produce 190 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque. Cruise control is standard on all models.
The 1996 Nissan Maxima gets standard driver and passenger front impact airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes on all models. Other standard features include power remote trunk release, power door locks, a rear defroster, cornering lights, and illuminated entry. Fixed interval windshield wipers are standard on the GXE and SE, while variable intermittent windshield wipers are standard on the GLE. Variable intermittent windshield wipers are available as an option on the GXE and SE though. The SE also comes with front fog lights, whereas the GLE has remote keyless entry and a content theft-deterrent alarm system as standard features. Meanwhile, other models have these features as available options.
