2013 Nissan Sentra Review

For the launch of the 2013 Nissan Sentra, Nissan has completely redesigned the compact sedan. The release of this new version of the four-door sedan marks the seventh generation of the car. The all-new 2013 model has been designed to emulate larger, midsize sedans instead of trying to be something completely different.

The 2013 Nissan Sentra is more like the midsize Nissan Altima, but smaller in size and price. According to Nissan, the goal of this change of focus for the compact car is to market to a new population of drivers, those who are looking for style over performance, but want a smaller car. The designers of the 2013 Nissan Sentra have gone out of their way to create a car that looks and feels like a much larger and more mature sedan.

New For 2013

The 2013 Nissan Sentra has been completely redesigned for the launch of the 2013 model year. Notable changes for this seventh generation of the sedan include:

  • Built on a new, lighter platform meaning the 2013 Nissan Sentra has an overall length increase of two inches
  • New 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with a new six-speed manual transmission or a new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)
  • Improved gas mileage
  • New exterior and interior styling, including a new electronics interface

Exterior

The exterior of the 2013 Nissan Sentra has been influenced by the Infiniti sedans, leading to softly sculpted sheet metal that gives the new generation of the sedan a more upscale, yet laid-back, profile. The compact sedan is tied to the larger 2013 Nissan Altima in the fact that the same trapezoid-shaped front grille and wraparound front lights with LED accents have been included. A chrome-finished grille and door handles and body-color side mirrors finish off the high-end new look of the 2013 Nissan Sentra.

The base model of the 2013 Nissan Sentra is equipped with 16-inch steel wheels, but stepping up to the SR and SL adds 17-inch alloy wheels. The SR represents the sporty version of the sedan, so as well as the increased wheel size it is made to look sportier with the addition of fog lights, a rear spoiler, and lower body skirting.

Interior & Cargo

Not only does the 2013 Nissan Sentra look like a premium sedan from the outside, but this feeling continues into the all-new, redesigned interior. The use of high-quality materials, a redesigned instrument panel featuring luminescent gauges, and a contoured shape create the illusion of being in a car that is larger and costs more than the 2013 Nissan Sentra.

The new platform and increase in length also mean that there is an increase in the size of the cabin. Both leg and headroom have been increased in the rear seats to ensure that all passengers feel more than comfortable when seated back there. The cargo area in the rear has also increased, and is one of the largest found in its class. Although this classifies as a compact car, it only does so by a mere margin.

Safety

Standard safety equipment for all models of the 2013 Nissan Sentra includes electronic stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints in the front seats. A backup camera is available as an option.

Driving Experience

The engine found in the new generation of the Nissan Sentra is actually smaller and produces slightly less power than that found in the previous model. This may seem counter-intuitive to some, but the goal of this change was to compete with rival vehicles that were logging significantly higher gas mileage values. The new engine is a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that provides 130 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a six-speed manual transmission in the base S, or the CVT on all the other models. The EPA ratings for the 2013 Nissan Sentra are 27/36 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 30/39 mpg city/highway with the CVT.

Although the engine of the 2013 Nissan Sentra is one of the least powerful in its class, the fact that the new build is lighter means that the compact sedan provides adequate acceleration. Of course, with a fully loaded car, acceleration is affected, and drivers should take this into consideration when making maneuvers at speed or on hilly terrain. It comes equipped with a three-mode drive selector to allow drivers to adjust power, suspension, and steering settings for more economical or performance-related driving.
