2013 Nissan Versa Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

An economical choice with excellent performance and lots of comfort, the 2013 Nissan Versa offers the choice of a five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan. Available in several trim levels, each offering varying features and options, this entry-level subcompact offers the performance and roominess of a larger vehicle at a competitive price – especially when compared to similar vehicles in its class. Available in a choice of three transmissions and several options, the Nissan Versa can be customized to suit the needs of any consumer in today’s demanding market. While it is not the wisest choice in terms of fuel economy, the Versa’s power and generous interior space offer a more rewarding driving experience than many of its competitors, without the higher price tag.

New For 2013

A few changes accompany this year’s Nissan Versa, including:

  • The new S Plus trim level has been added to the Versa’s selection of sedans
  • The SL trim level now includes an engine immobilizer, remote trunk release, sun visor extenders, and Intelligent Key as standard features
  • The S trim level now features a standard trunk light
  • The SV trim level now includes cloth door trim, chrome door handles, and a driver’s seat armrest
  • Versa sedans outfitted with a continuously variable automatic transmission now get an estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg highway

Exterior

Built as an economical entry-level vehicle, the Nissan Versa features a basic design that takes styling cues from other Nissan and Infiniti models. An aerodynamic vehicle with a low roofline, the Versa sedan has a drag coefficient of just 0.31, which makes up for its somewhat conservative design when compared to competitors. Available as a five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan, the 2013 Nissan Versa is a little larger than other vehicles in its class. Available in up to eight exterior colors including Metallic Blue, Super Black, and Red Brick, this year’s Versa includes standard 15-inch alloy or steel wheels, depending upon the trim level. Sixteen-inch wheels are available as an option. Intermittent wipers and a rear defogger come standard on all models. Exterior options include splash guards, chrome trunk accents, and a rear trunk spoiler. All sedans, except the base model, are equipped with a rear spoiler.

Interior & Cargo

The 2013 Nissan Versa includes a spacious interior with plenty of room for adult passengers in the front and the back, which sets it apart from other subcompact vehicles in its class. The seating is also comfortable, equipped with cloth bucket seats and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Basic comfort and conveniences are included with the base model, such as air-conditioning and cup holders, with the upgraded models adding a few more accessories, such as power door locks, one-touch power windows, and cruise control. Other luxuries, like steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls and simulated alloy interior trim, are included with the high-end SL trim level. An AM/FM sound system with a CD-player comes standard in all models, and Bluetooth technology is standard on the Versa SL, enabling hands-free calling. Several options are available to spruce up the interior, including illuminated kick plates, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and interior trim applique.

Safety

Standard safety features in the 2013 Nissan Versa include four-wheel Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS), front and rear head airbags, and dual front side-mounted airbags. Stability and traction control offer a smoother and safer ride, as well as electronic brake force distribution and tire pressure monitoring, all of which are included as standard with any trim level of the Nissan Versa. A backup camera is also available as an option, which improves visibility when reversing. For families with young children, child seat anchors and rear-door child safety locks are also included as standard features. The 2013 Nissan Versa was awarded an overall rating of four out of five stars in government crash tests, including three stars in frontal-impact crash tests and four stars in both side crash tests and rollover tests. The upgraded Versa SL trim level includes additional safety accessories such as a remote anti-theft alarm system and fog lights.

Driving Experience

Larger than many of its competitors, the 2013 Nissan Versa handles well and has a significant amount of power. The suspension is a little soft, but steering is smooth and precise. The Nissan Versa sedan comes equipped with a standard 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 107 horsepower (hp), while the hatchback includes a slightly more powerful 1.8-liter four-cylinder that puts out 122 hp. The sedan is available in either a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic, or an optional Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The hatchback offers the same choices of automatic and CVT, as well as a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy for the Nissan Versa is not as good as many other subcompacts, getting an estimated 26/31 mpg city/highway. An additional two mpg on the highway can be accomplished with the CVT option. Although the Versa competes with more fuel-efficient cars, it manages to make up for it with added performance on the road, creating a more enjoyable ride overall.
