What's New

There are no new features for the 1999 model as the Oldsmobile Alero was introduced to the public at the 1998 North American International Auto Show. This vehicle was intended to replace the older Achieva model with a newer, more attractive car.

Exterior

All models come with a variety of exterior color choices. The GX has four color choices, the GL sedan has eight, and the GL coupe and both GLS have nine choices for the exterior paint. That gives the buyer a lot of choices when it comes to the exterior color of their car. Exterior features that are standard for all models include body colored front bumpers, rear bumpers, and moldings. The GX and GL come with 15-inch wheels, while the GLS sub-models come with 16-inch wheels. A bonus feature of this vehicle is that the fuel flap is remote released. This prevents outside tampering with the fuel tank and siphoning.

Interior

The GL sub-models come with three color choices for the interior: neutral, pewter, and tan; although only one color, neutral, is available for the GX and GLS sub-models. Interior features that are standard for all sub-models include: front bucket seats, rear 60/40 bench seats, dual-visor vanity mirrors, a day/night rearview mirror, a dome light that fades, and front reading lights. There is more storage space in this vehicle than one would expect from a car its size. The center front armrest has storage as does the overhead compartment, instrument panel, and glove box. There is also a full floor console and two seatback pockets that can be utilized for storing small items. Also included as a standard feature in each sub-model is a steel spare tire.

Performance & Handling

This car uses a front strut suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. This combination of suspensions gives the car a smooth ride. This vehicle utilizes rack and pinion steering.

Safety

The Alero received a poor overall safety rating from the IIHS. However, it does have quite a few safety features to keep the driver and passengers safe. Standard safety features include driver and passenger airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, front and rear anti-roll bars, fully automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, an under hood light, illuminated entry, and two-door curb lights. All sub-models also come with a rear defroster and intermittent windshield wipers. Also standard is a warning to let the driver know when the key has been left in the ignition, and there is an ignition disable feature that prevents the car from starting without the ignition key. A radio theft deterrent comes standard with all sub-models as well. Another nice bonus feature is the window grid antenna. Instead of being screwed into the hood, the antenna on this vehicle is imprinted onto one of the vehicle’s window panes.

EPA Fuel Economy

Oldsmobile Alero GX: 22/30 mpg city/highway
Oldsmobile Alero GL: 22/30 mpg city/highway
Oldsmobile Alero GLS: 20/28 mpg city/highway
