2000 Oldsmobile Alero Review

Great all-around.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero is relatively new to the market. It was first revealed in 1998 at the North American International Auto Show. Available as both a sedan and a coupe, it was hailed as a success by consumers and the automotive press. The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero boasts a ton of features, as well as an impressive drivetrain. Buyers will be thrilled with the capable engines, refined steering and handling, and the creature comforts within. As long as you can forgive the unrefined engine noise, the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero is a great vehicle for everyone.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, coupe
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.4-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Oldsmobile Alero GX couple, Oldsmobile Alero coupe, Oldsmobile Alero GLS coupe, Oldsmobile Alero GX sedan, Oldsmobile Alero GL sedan, Oldsmobile Alero GLS sedan

What's New

The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero gains a few new features. A performance suspension is now available on the GL models, a feature only available previously on the top of the line coupe. The four-cylinder models have a new composite intake manifold that is lighter and more efficient. All models receive anchors for child-seating as well.

Exterior

The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero comes in two different body styles: a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan. The Alero is positioned as a stylish entry from Oldsmobile, and it doesn’t disappoint. Taking styling cues from the Aurora and Intrigue, the Alero is a bit more curved than its modeling partners. The nose and high rear deck are also different from other models. Both the sedan and the coupe ride on a 107-inch wheelbase, and a 187-inch overall length. Standard features include 15-inch wheels, a five-speed manual, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, intermittent windshield wipers, and a rear window defroster.

Interior

The interior of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero comes with front bucket seats that are deep and comfortable to ride in. Oldsmobile no longer offers bench seats in the front of the vehicle, a break from a long tradition. There is plenty of room in the front seats, even sitting six-foot drivers and passengers with little complaint. While the sedan models fit three in the back, the coupe is a bit narrower and only fits two comfortably. The instrument panel is easy to read and attractive, although there is the hint of some cheap materials throughout. Standard features in the base models include bucket seats, a center console, lighted entry system, tachometer, cloth seating, power steering, remote trunk release, tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, power door locks, and an AM/FM audio system. The GL and GLS models add power mirrors, a power sunroof, and a cassette player.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero comes with one of two engine types. The GX and GL models come equipped with a 2.4-liter, dual-overhead cam, four-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower. The engine is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The GL has a 3.4-liter, V-6 engine as an option. This engine produces 170 horsepower and is wed to the automatic transmission. Neither of the engines is particularly quite. When revving, the engines create a lot of noise that permeates the cabin. However, both engines are quite peppy and give an exciting performance. The engine is even paired to an Active Response System (ARS) that improves steering and handling. The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero is actually a surprisingly fun drive, handling itself well in corners and giving fun acceleration performance. Performance suspension that was once only available on the GLS coupe is now available on all models. Even the brakes are tight, stopping on a dime if asked.

Safety

The 2000 Oldsmobile Alero does not boast the greatest crash tests on the market. The NHTSA, gave the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero five out of five stars for passenger safety, and four out of five stars for driver safety. However, the Alero only received one out of five stars for side impacts to the front of the vehicle, and four out of five stars for side impacts to the rear of the vehicle. The IIHS gave the vehicle a rating of ""poor,"" its worst, for restraints. Leg, structural cage, and bumper safety received a score of ""marginal,"" second worst. Overall, the IIHS gave the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero a rating of ""poor"".

EPA Fuel Economy

Oldsmobile Alero 2.4-liter, four-speed automatic: 19/28 mpg city/highway
Oldsmobile Alero 2.4-liter, five-speed manual: 19/28 mpg city/highway
Oldsmobile Alero 3.4-liter, four-speed automatic: 17/29 mpg city/highway
