1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette Review

Popular, dependable, and diverse.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette is considered fun to drive due to its responsive engine and quality powertrain. The list of standard equipment is quite long, especially in the upper trim level models. There are a total of three trim levels and each is available in regular or extended versions. All six models use the same V-6 engine that's coupled with a four-speed automatic.

The Range

Body Styles: minivan
Engines: 3.4-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Oldsmobile Silhouette, Oldsmobile Silhouette Extended, Oldsmobile Silhouette GL, Oldsmobile Silhouette GL Extended, Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS, Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS Extended

What's New

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette is completely redesigned this year. All of the different models and trim levels have expanded lists of standard equipment.

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette's power external rearview mirrors are available with all three trim levels of both the regular and extended versions. A power moonroof and a remote keyless entry are available on the GL and GLS models. Standard features include fog lights, variable intermittent wipers, a rear window wiper, and a rear window defroster. All models also feature 15-inch alloy wheels.

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette gets air-conditioning, speed control, a tilt steering wheel, and power front windows as standard on all versions. All models also get front bucket seats, and captain rear seats are only a feature in the GLS models. This reduces the GLS seating capacity from seven in the other two trim levels to six. The base and GL models both have bench rear seats. The GLS receives a leather-wrapped steering wheel to complement its leather upholstery. Power adjustable driver and front passenger seats are used in the GL and GLS, but are not available in the base model.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette is equipped with the same 3.4-liter four-speed automatic combination across all models. Capable of generating 180 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque, it produces it a smooth and powerful ride, which is fun to drive. The steering is sharp and responsive, and the ride feels smooth on slightly uneven or worn road surfaces.

The 1997 Oldsmobile Silhouette includes dual front airbags, but no other airbags are listed for the Oldsmobile Silhouette. Traction control is an extra in the GL; however, it is standard in the GLS and not available in the base model. An anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard on all models.
